Prof. Carmen Jerónimo, Ph.D.

Leader of the Cancer Biology and Epigenetics Group at IPO-Porto and Invited Associate Professor in Pathology and Molecular Genetics at ICBAS-UP

Prof. Carmen Jerónimo is the Leader of the Cancer Biology and Epigenetics Group at the Portuguese Oncology Institute of Porto (IPO Porto), Portugal, as well as, Invited Associate Professor in Pathology and Molecular Genetics and the Director of the MSC in Oncology at the University of Porto (UP).

She obtained her BSc in Biology (1994),MSc in Oncology (1998), PhD in Biomedical Sciences (2001) and Habilitation in Pathology and Molecular Genetics (2011) at UP.She developed her PhDproject at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (JHU), Baltimore, MD, USA, working on prostate cancer’s genetic and epigenetic alterations. From 2002to 2008, she was a Post-doctoral Fellow and Invited researcher at IPO Porto, in collaboration with JHU.

In 2008 she established her independent group at IPO Porto (FCT-2008 Science Program).Her research is focused on the characterization of the epigenome of tumor cells, as well as the identification of functional changes involved in the breakdown of cell epigenetic homeostasis. In the context of Personalized Medicine, she is especially interested in the development of new of cancer epigenetic biomarkers based in liquid biopsies, as well as, in the drug discovery for cancer based on the modulation of cancer-related epigenetic aberrations.

She has supervised3 and co-supervised4 PhD students and supervised 20 master students.Presently she mentors 1 Post-doctoral fellows, 2 PhD students, and 4 Master students.

She collaborated in a patent submission (Methods and biomarkers for detection of bladder cancerUS 20130210011/ EP 2630261 A1/ WO 2012052844 A1), based in a study from her group in partnership with the Norwegian Radium Hospital and has participated in the international project funded by EU, Seventh Framework Programme (EpiDiaCan). She is/was MC substitute member of COST Action TD0905, MC member and Chair of WG2 - COST Action CM1406-EPICHEM and COST Action EPITRAN-CA16120.

Prof. Jerónimo is Associate Editor of Clinical Epigenetics and BMC Cancer and acts as ad hoc reviewer of several scientific journals. She has authored or co-authored more than 100 international scientific publicationsin prestigious journals, such as JNCI, JCO, Eur J Urol, Clin Can Res, Oncogene, Oncotarget, EJC, BJC and Epigenetics, and four book chapters.
