Short Biography

Prof. Jorge Gonçalves, Ph.D.

Full Professor of Pharmacology at FFUP and Researcher at the Center for Drug Discovery and Innovative Medicines (MedInUP)

Prof. Dr. Jorge Gonçalves (Orcid ID: orcid.org/0000-0002-3045-2150) is Professor of Pharmacology in the Department of Drug Sciences (Laboratory of Pharmacology) of the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto, being responsible for teaching of the Master degree course of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Doctoral courses of Neurosciences and Pharmacology.

He Is a former vice-rector for research and innovation of the University of Porto and, at the present, is researcher at the Center for Drug Discovery and Innovative Medicines (MedInUP). His field of research is centered in the role of purines and catecholaminesin the modulation of neurotransmission and in the communication between immune and cancer cells and the role played by PKCs and p53 on the respective transduction mechanisms. More recently, he has been involved in different projects to promote translational research and in repurposing pharmacology, particularly on the identification of drugs capable to modulate tumor microenvironment.

He has published more than 75 scientific papers in international peer-reviewed journals. His long-term goal is to contribute for the creation of a multidisciplinary group able to integrate the effects of repurposed drugs on a comprehensive model of oncogenesis and to foster the clinical use of such drugs.
