Short Biography

Prof. Raquel Soares, Ph.D.

Full Professor at FMUP and  Leader of Metabolism, Nutrition & Endocrinology Group at i3S

Raquel Soares is professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Porto (FMUP). She graduated in biochemistry at the faculty of sciences, UPorto. She has a master degree in Oncobiology and a PhD in Human Biology both at FMUP. She teaches Biochemistry for students in medicine and nutrition, as well as master and PhD programs mainly from FMUP but also from other institutions. She performed her habilitation in Metabolism” in 2009. She is director of the PhD program in Metabolism – clinical and experimental, held at FMUP since 2007/2008. She is head of department of support of research and post-graduation at FMUP, and coordinator of the Biochemistry unit at the department of Biomedicine, FMUP. She is also leader of the “Metabolism, nutrition & endocrinology” group at i3S, comprising several basic and clinical researchers from FMUP. Her field of study is angiogenesis and inflammation in disease, namely in cancer, obesity and diabetes. She published around 150 full papers in international ISI indexed journals (h-index: 31; number of citations: 3413), and edited a book entitled “Oxidative stress, inflammation and angiogenesis in metabolic syndrome”. Springer-Verlag, The Netherlands, 2009. She is author of 11 book chapters.
