Short Biography

Prof. Manuel Sobrinho-Simões, MD, Ph.D.

Jubilee Professor of Pathology of the Medical Faculty and  Director of IPATIMUP

Manuel Sobrinho Simões, MD, PhD is Jubilee Professor of Pathology of the Medical Faculty and    Director of the Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology of the University of Porto (PATIMUP)  which he co-launched in 1989. He is also aMember of the Board of Directors of the Institute for Investigation and Innovation in Health (I3S) which he co-started creating in 2008 under the auspices of the University of Porto.  MSS is co-author of more than 350 scientific publications which have given rise to more than 12000 citations (h factor 57). His main interests are oncobiology and thyroid cancer in the frame of translational research. MSS has been particularly involved in the integration of ultrastructural, immunocytochemical and molecular data in pathology and oncology of endocrine organs. His research group has published seminal papers on Papillary microcarcinoma of the thyroid, GRIM-19 and  Hürthle cell tumours, Different phenotypes of follicular variant PTC, BRAF mutations in  PTCand in other thyroid cancers, and TERT promoter mutations in thyroid tumours. MSS carries out 200 to 300 diagnostic consultations per year on thyroid lesions for foreign hospitals and cancer institutes. MSS was President of the European Society of Pathology from 1999 to 2001, after having been Secretary from 1989 to 1997. He helped creating EUROCELLPATH (European Courses on Cellular Pathology) and the European School of Pathology, and has been co-organizing the ESCoP Courses in Thyroid and Parathyroid Tumours since 1992. MSSco-organizes every year in Paris, since 2002, the Thyroid Tumour Course for Practicising Pathologists of the French Division of the International Academy of Pathology (IAP). MSS has been elected by his peers “The most influent pathologist” in a survey conducted in 2016 by the british journal “The pathologist”.
